Opportunistic Infections
Subcommittee of Complications of HIV RAC
Goals and Objectives

The Opportunistic Infections Subcommittee members must have special knowledge of diverse opportunistic infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, fungi), immunopathogenesis (particularly cellular immunity), and pharmacology (first- and second-line antimicrobials) to deal with those infections that cause morbidity and mortality in HIV-infected children. Opportunistic infection protocols will be either primary or nested.

Following are the specific aims of the Opportunistic Infections Subcommittee:

Specific Aim 1. To determine in children the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of antimicrobial agents for pathogens important in pediatric HIV infection so that rational and optimal use is possible.
Specific Aim 2. To determine pharmacokinetics, drug interaction, safety, and efficacy of a broad-spectrum multiple opportunistic pathogen prophylaxis (MOPP) scheme for HIV-infected children.
Specific Aim 3. To evaluate the immunogenicity, duration of immunity, and safety of childhood vaccines in HIV-infected infants and children in order to optimize their use in this population.
Specific Aim 4. To investigate the pathogenetic interaction between opportunistic infections and the progression of HIV infection in children through the conduct of interventional trials.
Specific Aim 5. To identify and develop new laboratory technologies for opportunistic pathogens that will be useful in the conduct of clinical trials.
